Matthew 1 “Son of Man” [Main message: Jesus is here and with us now]
New notes: Emphasis on Matthew's audience as Jewish Lay out inconsistencies with Luke's gospel Luke's genealogy based on Mary? “Son of Man” in OT Genealogy testifies to Jesus as historical Story: Wycliffe Bible translator – worked with a tribe of people for over ten years – they did not have a written Bible – they had no written language – so she learned their language, and created their language in written form – then she began to translate Matthew, leaving out the genealogy – no interest – she re-wrote it, including the genealogy – the chief, “You mean, Jesus was a real person?” – the chief became a Christian, and so did the whole tribe
Introduction: (Pray...) We're staring a new series: Matthew This morning, I want to introduce you to the first book of the NT If you are here today and you have not read Matt – I want to challenge you this week... Today, we're going to look at some interesting facts, you might have skimmed over The title of my sermon is “Son of Man” The Gospel of Matthew does use the term, “Son of God” – but most of the time, he uses “Son of Man” And so, why is that? Mainly – because it recognizes that Jesus came to Earth as a man He was the Son of God who came in human flesh He was fully God, but also fully man when he came to Earth (Wed night study) “kinsman Redeemer” The term “Son of Man” comes to us mostly from the book of Matthew: Matthew: 29 times – (Son of God: 9 times) Mark: 14 Luke: 26 John: 13 Acts: 1 Hebrews: 1 Revelation: 3 Mark 1:1 The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. Look at Matthew 1:1 – and notice how Jesus is described: The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham.
The son of David – referring to Jesus as King, Messiah The son of Abraham – referring to Jesus as the promise from God – Jesus is the fulfillment of prophecy It's interesting to note the number of times that Jesus referred to himself as “Son of Man” in Matthew alone: When the Pharisees accused him of blasphemy, he said this in Matt 9:6 But that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins”—he then said to the paralytic—“Rise, pick up your bed and go home.” Jesus said this in Matt 12:8 For the Son of Man is lord of the Sabbath. In Matt 24:30 he said - Then will appear in heaven the sign of the Son of Man, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. Listen to this in Matthew 26:64 Jesus said to him, “You have said so. But I tell you, from now on you will see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of Power and coming on the clouds of heaven.” “Son of Man” is not just in the NT – listen to this from Daniel 7:13 I saw in the night visions, and behold, with the clouds of heaven there came one like a son of man,and he came to the Ancient of Days and was presented before him. 14 And to him was given dominion and glory and a kingdom, that all peoples, nations, and languages should serve him; his dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and his kingdom one that shall not be destroyed. If you know about the Gospels – Matt, Mark, Luke are called “the synoptics” – then there's John... What's interesting is that portions of Mark appears so much in Matthew & Luke Most scholars believe that Matthew & Luke used Mark as a reference That is to say – that we believe Mark was written first But Matthew is not a direct copy of Mark – and Matthew contains material not found in Mark As a Jewish teacher, Jesus uses: parables, graphic illustrations, hyperbole, and rhetorical techniques What is the genre of Matthew? Is it biography – or hx? It's not a typical biography – and it's not really a book on history I like to regard it as “biographical hx” But, it's not exhaustive hx... All four Gospels show an inordinate dedication to the last week of Jesus' life before he died on the cross and rose from the grave The entire chapters of Matthew 21-28 are dedicated to this By the way, Matthew mostly refers to the “Kingdom of Heaven”, rather than “Kingdom of God” (4 exceptions) Here's how to think of the four Gospels (Matt, Mark, Luke, John) – they are four different portraits – but one Jesus Four different eye witnesses to the one life of Jesus Christ Praise God we have four witnesses to Jesus' life who carefully wrote it down
Let's go back to chapter one of Matthew Verse 23 is the summary of chapter one – and you might say the summary of the entire Bible: and they shall call his name Immanuel” (which means, God with us)
That's the summary – that Jesus came to Earth The entire OT points to the life of Jesus – and the NT obviously points to his life Both OT & NT talk about when he will return So, if verse 23 is the summary, then verse 21 is the purpose of chapter one – and you could say the purpose of the entire Bible and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from...What? from their sins
God dwells among us – he walked the Earth and now dwells in our hearts And Jesus saves people from their sins The Gospel of Matthew is from Matthew's POV – this is what we know from reading Matthew This is what we will learn as we study this book: That Jesus is the supreme teacher For whose teachings, his disciples must make more disciples Jesus is the rightful ruler of Israel, God's Son, the Messiah Who will return to judge the world Jesus calls us to radical discipleship He demands us to be obedient He promises us success in our mission for him But not without suffering & persecution But Jesus is ultimately shown to be: King, Messiah, Son of Man, Son of God, Rightful Lord of Israel, The final Judge, the true revelation of the Father He was meek, lowly, and compassionate He taught us how to love because he is love Who walked among his disciples, healed the sick, and died for the people He embraced sinners on the ground – and became sin when he was lifted up in the air And finally, he is the one who charged us to: Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
Sermon: Matthew starts off with the genealogy of Jesus The genealogy of Jesus is only found in Matthew & Luke In fact, it's sort of hard to find Luke's genealogy – it doesn't appear until the end of chapter 3 Luke's genealogy goes all the way back to Adam – and Adam is referred to as “son of God”... Matthew only goes back to Abraham In Matthew, Jesus is revealed as the Jewish Messiah – whose life fulfilled prophecy A “genealogy of failures” - I'll explain what I mean in a minute But the genealogy points to the Good News: that Jesus came to us, and walked among us – and saved us from our sins That's the Good News! Here's a comparison between the genealogies of Matthew and of Luke: Matthew: Luke: Goes back to Abraham Goes back to Adam “Legal” list of ancestors “Bloodline” list of ancestors Jesus belongs to the house of David (Same) Also, the two genealogies are reported in opposite order: Matthew starts back in time and moves forward in time Luke begins with Jesus and goes back in time Matthew lists all the fathers – and Luke lists all the sons So look in verse 2 of Matt 1... When I say that this is a genealogy of failures – I mean that all these people are sinners Jesus came from a line of sinners – and yet he was without sin! We go from Abraham to Issac – and Issac to Jacob – and Jacob to Judah – all of these guys were knuckleheads! And then look at verse 3 – we come to a person called Tamar Tamar was a woman! In fact, in verses 3-16 there are five women! You need to know, that in ancient genealogies – to list a woman would be scandalous! Tamar (v. 3) who pretended to be a prostitute (Genesis 38) – and she's in the genealogy of Jesus Rahab (v. 5) was a real prostitute – and she's in the genealogy of Jesus Ruth (v. 5) was a Moabite, who were bitter enemies to Israel – in fact, they were subject to a special curse from God in Deut 23 – she's in there Bathsheba (v. 6) was King David's downfall – Most everyone in here will not be able to find her name – that's because she's not even named! Most Bibles don't even say, “Bathsheba”...only to say she was the “wife of Uriah”! Remember that guy? The guy who was murdered by David? Matthew couldn't even write her name. Ever realize – no one names their daughter Bathsheba (and yet David was the perpetrator) Interesting to note: Bathsheba was the mother of...it's right there in v. 6...Solomon And Solomon was not only the wisest man – but he wrote Proverbs Next time you study proverbs think, “This is written by the son of Bathsheba” Mary (v. 16) she fulfills Isaiah 7:14 which is quoted in v. 23... “Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call his name Immanuel” Matthew divides all the people into 3 groups of 14 Ancient genealogies are often selective – they don't always include every name – Uncle Bob might not be in there! This is done in the Bible to show theological emphasis Verse 17... 17 So all the generations from Abraham to David were fourteen generations, and from David to the deportation to Babylon fourteen generations, and from the deportation to Babylon to the Christ fourteen generations. The Birth of Jesus Christ 18 Now the birth of Jesus Christ took place in this way. When his mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be with child from the Holy Spirit. 19 And her husband Joseph, being a just man and unwilling to put her to shame, resolved to divorce her quietly. 20 But as he considered these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. 21 She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.” This is the purpose of why Jesus came to Earth Jesus in Greek: Joshua – which means “Yahweh is salvation”, or “Yahweh saves” Yahweh, the Lord – the same one who created us, and has the right & the power to judge us and condemn us – is the same Yahweh who offers us salvation Verse 22...
22 All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet: 23 “Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son,
and they shall call his name Immanuel” (which means, God with us). Verse 23 is the summary of chapter one – and of the Bible “virgin” - think about that – all of us came from Adam & original sin, but not Jesus Jesus did not come from Adam's sin – Jesus did not sin – but he became sin, on the cross 2 Cor 5:21 He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him. “and they shall call his name Immanuel” It means God with us Jesus came & dwelt among men But we are not left out! Josh 1:9 Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go. Isaiah 43:1-2 But now thus says the Lord,
he who created you, O Jacob,
he who formed you, O Israel:
“Fear not, for I have redeemed you;
I have called you by name, you are mine.
2 When you pass through the waters, I will be with you;
and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you;
when you walk through fire you shall not be burned,
and the flame shall not consume you.
24 When Joseph woke from sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded him: he took his wife, 25 but knew her not until she had given birth to a son. And he called his name Jesus.
Here's the message, and the whole point: Jesus is here, with us Jesus, the Son of God became the Son of Man – to be our kinsman Redeemer The same God who created us in his image – who knew we needed redemption from our sins – that same God became our Redeemer
